​Subclavian steal syndrome



A Weak Pulse Can Reveal More Than Expected

An Upper Limb Arterial Doppler examination was performed for a patient referred with a feeble pulse in the left upper limb.

The Doppler study demonstrated altered arterial waveforms (phasicity) in the left upper limb vessels. A targeted evaluation of the neck was subsequently performed, revealing reversed flow in the left vertebral artery—a characteristic finding of subclavian steal syndrome.

This case highlights the importance of extending the examination beyond the initial area of concern when indicated. A systematic Doppler assessment can uncover the underlying cause of vascular symptoms and guide timely referral for appropriate management.
