Looking Beyond the Primary Finding: The Value of a Detailed Fetal Ultrasound
A Fetal Well-Being Ultrasound was performed for the evaluation of fetal cerebral ventriculomegaly.
In addition to confirming ventriculomegaly, the examination also identified an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA)—an important soft marker associated with an increased likelihood of Trisomy 21. When present, ARSA can significantly increase the estimated risk and may warrant further fetal assessment and genetic counseling in the appropriate clinical context.
This case highlights the importance of a meticulous, systematic fetal ultrasound examination, where identifying associated findings can have a meaningful impact on prenatal risk assessment and clinical decision-making.
